The Power of Body
Almin Zrno, the proportional harmony and beauty of human body showing its full potential and expressiveness
Almin Zrno
Opening: 25 May at 8pm
Small gallery, Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana
An acclaimed Sarajevo-based photographer, Almin Zrno’s Ljubljana exhibition will feature the classical motif of numerous photographers, namely, the proportional harmony and beauty of human body showing its full potential and expressiveness, be it in motion or motionless, dancing or practising sports. Zrno repeatedly succeeds in highlighting new details, new movement through the play of light. He discloses human musculature in the glow of his artistic rapture and inspiration, the lofty sentiments he conveys in the synesthetic atmosphere of the Eros of anatomy (life) as the antithesis of Thanatos.
The artist focuses on the ‘body in power’ and ‘the power of body’ by means of diverse visual structures of human anatomy, alluding to Da Vinci’s proportions of the human body, which according to Vitruvius, are the principal parameter of beauty. The exhibition also includes a slideshow of photographs from Zrno’s monograph, Viječnica, which is a selection of works by illustrious artists including Jannis Kounellis, Edo Murtić and Braco Dimitrijević, who had exhibited at one time or another in the since demolished premises of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina¬–an exceptional piece of Austro-Hungarian architecture built in the Moorish revival style–that was destroyed in the Yugoslav Wars.
Almin Zrno (1966) demonstrated his exceptional talent for photography already as a high-school student and member of the Photo-Cine Club CEDUS from Sarajevo. Fully asserting himself after the Yugoslav Wars, over the last decade Zrno has emerged as a prominent photography figure of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Having concluded master courses at World Press Photo, Reuters and the British Council, Zrno was appointed Director of Photography of Avaz, planning, directing, and coordinating photographic coverage at the most influential news publisher of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1996, and since 1999 at the weekly publication Dani. Apart from engaging in his artistic pursuit, Zrno works in news, fashion, portrait and commercial photography. Member and current President of ULUPUBiH (The Association of Artists of Applied Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Almin Zrno has been freelance photographer since 2000. He has devised or co-devised several catalogues and monographs and has been a recipient of numerous prestigious national photography awards.
