PHOTONIC MOMENTS 2020
FESTIVAL IS CANCELED BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC.
FESTIVAL IS CANCELED BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC.
You can still read about our initial idea of the event explained below.
The Photonic Moments 2020 is focused on the 20th-century industrial heritage perceived through the prism of photography and related media. The international group exhibition Concrete Dreams as well as the exhibition by Bernd and Hilla Becher examine how photography can contribute to our understanding of industrial development, which can be perceived today, on the one hand, as part of cultural (material, especially architectural) heritage, and on the other, with regards to its negative consequences, as a threat to our very existence. A segment of our thematic focus is geared towards ecology, by which we want to further highlight the potential significance of photography in tackling the current issues in this field.
In addition to its thematic focus, the festival also introduces some other relevant names from the world of photography. The event opens with a retrospective of Henri Cartier-Bresson at the Cankarjev dom Gallery on 16 June, while the exhibition Meltdown which focuses on the changing global climate through the importance of glaciers, will be shown at the Jakopič Gallery.
The intensive accompanying programme remains an important part of the festival. In the context of the festival’s central topic, Cankarjev dom will host an all-day programme of presentations, talks, and round-table discussions that will conclude with evening screenings. We also traditionally organise an international portfolio review, where in two days, the presented projects and works are evaluated by a large number of internationally renowned artists, curators, festival representatives, editors, gallerists, publishers, etc. in 20-minute face-to-face conversations.
