(Un)known, an exhibition by Mirjam Čančer, Andrej Lamut, Katra Petriček and Jon Žagar, represents a phase of emancipation from photography studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana. The exhibition per se questions the past and builds a new autonomous future for the already acknowledged young artists.

Meanwhile, their desire for recognition and independence will be manifested through their active role in the gallery space, allowing them to be in touch with the present. With this exhibition, the authors enter the vast field of culture and art. In the period from 2010 and 2016, they explored and examined the medium of photography in order to find their creative expression and position as authors, relying on the already tried practices in art production only to master them and ultimately enhance them through their own creative expression. Their long-lasting collaboration was based on the appropriation of the known, through the affirmation of idiosyncrasy.

The exhibited works raise questions relating to the identity, performative character, objectified nature and tangibility of the language of photography. The exhibition gives greater insight into the creative processes of the artists as they create an art piece. By providing their personal accounts along the way, the artists help the audience to better understand not just their inner motivations, but also the medium of photography in general. A deviation from the usual practice, the exhibition is a unique display of various creative paths. Though tightly intertwined in their common pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship, at the same time their paths diverge, each towards the its distinctly individual creative thought.
