Video in Progress 5: Reflections of the Past

Artist in Focus: ANJA MEDVED

Conversation with the artist and presentation of her work

Anja Medved: Memory-donation Actions
Talk and screening
Saturday, 7 June 2014, 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm, ZRC Atrium, Novi trg 2, Ljubljana

A conversation between the selector of the festival Vesna Bukovec and the director and video-maker Anja Medved – the artist in focus of the fifth edition of international festival Video in Progress.

The author will present her multi-annual project of memory-donation actions, a public collection of personal photos and memories. She collects them since 2007 on various occasions, mostly related to the experience of the former state border. The memory-donation actions resulted in several documentary videos, which will be screened at the event.

On this occasion we are announcing the first public presentation of the documentary video Memory Clinic – Ljubljana. A project based on a memory-donation action organized as part of the My Streets project at Vžigalica Gallery in February 2012. At time the residents of Ljubljana were invited to bring photographs of their city from their family albums to the gallery and share the memories related to them in front of a camera. The video is part of an online documentary project by Anja Medved and Tina Popovič, co-produced by the Kinoatelje Institute, Divja Misel Institute and MGML.

Janez Puhar (1814-1864)

A documentary exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of the first Slovenian photographer and photographic inventor

Opening: 4 June at 7.30 pm

4-28 June 2014

ZRC Atrium, Ljubljana

WHERE: Novi trg 2, Ljubljana

Janez Puhar was born on 26 August 1814 in Kranj. He attended Normalschule in Kranj and grammar school in Ljubljana, where he later studied theology. In 1838 he became a parish assistant. He served as a chaplain in various places. He died in Kranj on 7 August 1864. Janez Puhar probably first encountered the daguerreotype back in 1839. He mastered the daguerreotype process the following year. But his daguerreotypes have not survived. While serving in Metlika he undertook the first independent attempts involving glass plates. The daguerreotype (a unique image on a silver-plated metal plate) was a demanding and expensive photographic technique. So Puhar invented a more affordable and simpler way of taking photographs with the help of glass plates treated with sulphur vapours. He continued with his experiments in Ljubno in the Gorenjska region and in Bled.
